Match Report v Cottenham

Sunday we hosted Cottenham on a freshly cut Hemingford pitch. With Sedge off skiing and Kingy playing a big golf Match with Lynne. Dazer was handed the job of getting the team back to winning Ways. Kingy said” we have never lost three on the bounce.” He had 15 to choose from so Dazer decided after a 16 hour session at Twickenham  on Saturday was not to pick himself.

We started with a great four- four -two formation. With Big Kev and Nigel back at central defence – Dave right back and Darren left back. A great centre of midfield with Chris and Two touch. Simon on the left and Little Kev on the right. A hard decision up front with four excellent strikers Dippy, Rudders, Gavin and James squire and young 36 year old from Buckden. Dippy only had five pints the night before  so got the nod  with Rudders.

The team talk was very structured ,disciplined and the boys started excellently against a younger Cottenham side. Big Kev and Nigel who never stops talking driving the team forward. What a different side from last week ,passing quickly, wanting the ball and Two touch playing his best game for a while.

Within five minutes Simon put a great ball on Two touches head which he hit the bar with. ( hmmm). Dippy should look at himself as he was magnificent making superb runs with Rudders up front . He was rolling back the years and bringing Chris Keeble and little Kev into the game.  Then another great cross from Little Kev and Two touch didn’t miss from a diving header.

The boys were closing down like Barcelona – where did that come from . Cottenham could not live with the fitness which was said by our missing Talisman Sedge at Half time last week.

A superb tackle by Dave at left back a one two with Darren and Simon saw the ball fall to Chris. A 25 yard strike 2-0 .

Half time whistle and Blakey was glad to rest his years from Rudders running commentary.

A superb first half and some great Banter at half time.

Three changes at half time. Roy the flying Scotsman for Darren , James for Rudders and Gavin for Dippy. Hard decisions but the right ones.

Within a minute Gavin our new centre forward with the key absences of Midge and Howard ran past the marauding goal keeper 3-0. The pace of James and Gavin soon set up a corner. A superb cross and far post half volley from James made it 4-0. Game over and Cottenham were getting very tired.

Dazer was rotating the team and Darren and Rudders were back on. Some superb football down the left from Rudders, Simon, two touch set up Darren for the goal of the game.

The flood gates were opening and Dippy was back on at Left back. Another pacey run from Gavin set up James for the fifth and after four attempts Darren got his second to make it 6-0.

Chris and Big Kev were off the pitch and Dave was back on. We were dominating and Darren got seventh from some pace from our front two . Gavin and James were playing like they played every week. However in Vets football pace, a good touch and a team moving the ball will always make Chances.

It did with five minutes to go James got his second from a great ball from Simon and cross from Gavin.

Then the two highlights of the game- Dippy on at left back must have been getting bored . He went to kick the ball ,missed it and did a flying kung foo kick?( MOYM -HMMM?)

Then Blakey blow for the finalwhistle as James got his hatrick and made it 9-0. Goal disallowed with Big Kev saying “ Blakey you always do this to me”.

A great performance and how Hemingford a renowned for . A joy to watch, be part of and Manage for the day. We made a good Cottenham side look very average.

The banter was a lot better this week after the game .

With three massive players Sedge , Howard and Midge still to come back we all should be looking forward to the big one Next Sunday”
