Away v Newmarket

We travelled to Newmarket with 12 players due to Dippy's lie in and a few absentees through injury and other commitments.
We had a couple of new players to help us out and before long one of them Nick had opened the scoring following in a rebound from the keeper after some great play from rudders and Gavin.
Newmarket have always been a good team but their elder statesmen have usually tired and allowed us to get on top. However, this time they had a strong squad with 18 or 19 players which helped them to continually shuffle the pack and keep everyone fresh.
Before long a long punt upfield caused disruption in the box and with Youngy off his line their big forward Conners expertly lobbed over the stranded keeper.
This rocked us a little but we were still on top. However, before long it was worse for us as they scored another as Conners drilled a low drive in after a bobbly ball fell to him in the box. Soon after it was worse still after a cross was cleared by new Kev which unluckily bounced onto an on rushing player Boats and rebounded into the net leaving Youngy with no chance.
We were determined to bounce back and dominated most of the possession again in the second half. However, try as we might we could not score. We had the ball in the net at one stage but it was ruled offside. It looked dubious but they are good lads and we still felt we could trouble them.
Sedge, Two Touch, Gav and Nick all came close after patches of good play but without troubling the keeper and that is how it ended.
It was the first time they had beaten us and it shows that if you don't take your chances you can get punished no matter how much possession you have.  It was a committed display from all of our opponents but despite the disappointment we went for a pint and some great sausage and chips with them!  First time they have beaten us for a few years , if ever -so hopefully it won't happen again.
Kettering next week and we will all be keen to bounce back...
