A lovely day for a game of football saw Hemingford maintain their 100% start to the season even though it is early on in the campaign. Two more debutants this week helped our cause and this was important with Dippy unable to locate the ground and Paul XXXXX retiring injured in the first 10 minutes, wishing you a speedy recovery Paul.
With several big hitters missing and a back line that claimed 199 years between them this had the ingredients for a close and competitive game. Hemingford had the best of the early exchanges and dominated possession but it was Caldecote who nearly opened the scoring with a fine header that rebounded off the angle before being cleared. It was not long however before captain Clark picked out a fine run by debutant Andrew Connors who took the ball in his stride and lofted the ball over the oncoming keeper. Hemingford looked more likely to add a second and when Chris XXXX rose and nodded home no one really understood why it was ruled out by the referee. Then seconds before the half time whistle Caldecote beat the Hemingford offside trap and their winger rounded Glen XXXX to finish, 1:1.
After some tactical changes Hemingford opened the 2nd half more brightly and it was not long before Wazza got his first of the season instinctively curling one just under the bar from just inside the box. Shortly after this it was 3:1 when Wazza’s tireless work in midfield earned a clear penalty when he was upended in the box. He got up to take the penalty himself and smashed it past the Caldecote keeper. A few more half chances fell to Connors and Jardine xxxx but the lead was not extended. A bit of complacency allowed Caldecote to get back in the game but they were thwarted by 2 top class saves by Glen. However, with 5 minutes to go Kev Hurst pressed the self-destruct button and allowed the Caldecote forward to take the ball from him right on front of goal 3:2 and a nervous finish. Kev was solid all game until his Strictly Come Dancing move went horribly wrong. Glen was full of support for the hapless Hurst. I think he said he would take him out on a punt to forget about it. Fortunately the boys dug in for the final minutes with Daryl XXXX and Nigel Parker continuing their good work in protecting the tiring back four and Hemingford held on to a deserved win.
A special thanks to the new guys Andrew Connors and Mark XXXX who were both excellent today.
Man of the Match goes to Wazza who did not stop working for the full 90 minutes and he is a credit to the over 50’s. His 2 goals were the icing on top of a match winning performance.
