What a goal feast we had today in our return fixture with Royston coming out winners 6. 1. I had 18 players this morning and I'm doing my best to be fair to all. It is brilliant that so many want and enjoy playing. Our general play in the first 30 mins was the best we have played this season keeping the ball moving and using the whole width of the pitch ,and it was no surprise to be 3 goals up at that stage We started the ball rolling when our brilliant centre half kevin hurst intercepted a through ball he laid it on to wazz our lynch pin midfielder he in turn passed to kempy who,s 1 ,2 with sedge found kempy on the edge of the box and he coolly sloted passed the advancing keeper. . We had lost a couple of players ,phil, hamstring injury and dippy with a groin injury (Sorry dippy there goes your mom award) Their replacements were Roy Shaw and Glen (man of many positions)Glen playing at left back intercepted a cross field pass 10 yds in his own half, played the ball to kempy on the left wing,he drove forward got to the by line and crossed only to see that glen had continued his run,and from 6 yds out bundled it passed the keeper.. We were in total control now and our passing was excellent, Sedge was enjoying himself in midfield nutmegging a couple of players on the way and it was his through ball to Matt who from 25 yds out beat the offside trap and ran on to beat the keeper. It was not all one way traffic and if it hadn't been for a couple of excellent save from our keeper Barry Cavilla we could have been in trouble. We started to play too many long balls and lost our way a bit, this allowed Royston to get into the game ,and from one of there corners they scored a well taken goal. Half time 3..1 Royston had a couple of injuries so i gave them Carl Circus, Darrell May and Kev Hurst (20 mins). Thanks to those players as i know they would have rather played for us.Vets football is all about enjoying your game and it gave everyone a game. Roy Essendoh and i came on for us. Our strength this season is we can keep going for the whole match, Royston were starting to tire ,possibly the best move of the game resulted in us getting the 4th goal.Barry passed the ball to me at left back,i knocked it inside to wazz, he passed it to Paul ,who knocked it up to Roy, he held it up passed it back to sedge who,s 1st time pass split the defence and Paul had continued his run,he collected the ball some 35 yds out and with his young 40 yr old legs outstripped the defence and ran into the box before slotting passed the keeper. It wasnt all one way traffic and Royston had 3 chances from outside the box to shoot ,but Barry made 3 excellent saves. The 5th goal was an excellent strike from the edge of the box by Roy,as soon as he hit it you knew it was in,right in the top corner. The final goal came in the last 5 mins with Paul once again running from deep to beat the offside trap beat the keeper from 10 yds. The football was better 2nd half as we retained the ball well, Stu Smith our young 58 yr old was starting to show boat at right back, flicking one ball over a player ,then back heeling another,it was great to watch him enjoying himself.. Overall an excellent team performance with this weeks man of the match goes to Paul, who's 2 goals and his overall workrate was brilliant.
Well done all. Neil
