22nd November 2015 Hemingford Vets v C.U.P.

On paper a strong looking Hemingford side took the field against a youthful looking C.U.P. on a bright but wintry day. An early mistake gifted the visitors an opening goal and put Hemingford on the back foot for a brief spell. When Hemingford began to find their stride an equaliser looked on then cards and soon arrived when Nigel Parker superbly released Chris Parker down the right, he calmly cut back for an oncoming Ben Sedgmore to convert calmly. The game then became a bit stretched with Hemingford showing better quality in the attacking third. Midge began to martial the midfield and the chances began to arrive. Steve 'Two Touch' Hastings on another day could have wrapped up a hat trick in 15 minutes, he saw a superb strike come of the upright, a close header saved by the away keeper and a volley in the 6 yard box just pass the post. In between a fine individual effort from Dippy brought the best out of the C.U.P. keeper who was quickly becoming the visitors Man of the Match. Despite their dominance Hemingford paid the price for the missed chances and C.U.P. took advantage of some slack defending just before the break and went in at half time leading 2:1. Was it going to be one of those days.

Sedge did not make it back after the break nursing a calf injury and Glen went back in goal despite a spirited performance up front his knee injury causing problems once again. Down but not out Hemingford believed they had enough to get back in the game and the opening exchanges on the 2nd half were pretty even. Defensively Hemingford looked pretty solid martialled well by Mat Warren and supported excellently by an accomplished performance at left back by Paul Sully who was doing the work of 2 players (Dippy was in front of him). It was a 2nd fatal defensive mistake that then gifted an important 3rd goal to C.U.P. This took the stuffing out of Hemingford for a while and when Mat Warren departed and Kev Hurst left the pitch with an injury the writing was on the wall. However another slick movement on the right ended with Midge slotting home competently and game on. An equaliser looked on the cards and when Midge went through on goal this looked like the opportunity before he was cynically brought down on the edge of the box. A penalty claim and a potential red card? Nothing! The resulting free kick that followed came to nothing. C.U.P held on and were the victors on the day. So yes it was one of those days and only got worse when Spurs hammered my beloved West Ham ffs.

Bring on next week.
