The British U23 National Championships is one of the most prestigious events in the UK squash calendar. The Sports Academy, based at Hunts County Squash Club in Hemingford Grey, became home to the tournament for the first time in 2009 and has hosted the competition annually ever since.
Previously a major event in the squash calendar, the championships ceased to be run in 2005 when they were held at the national squash centre in Sports City, Manchester. Bringing a major event to the club was a key objective after the refurbishment of the facilities, and addition of the fourth ‘show court’ and viewing gallery. 4 International standard courts and a great location and facility surrounding the squash club made it the perfect venue for a tournament of this size and stature.
The team run the competition on a ‘not for profit’ basis, with all generated revenues funding the running costs with any profit going straight into the junior account for use with bursaries and player sponsorships for example. Our aim is provide an elite level environment for the players in an alternative ‘club’ environment outside the stereotypical centers for large squash events. The popularity of the event for players, ES&R staff, referees and guests has proven this to be a success that will be continued into the future.
